CHAPTER 3 · THE FOREST

The trees stood silent as Iza crept between them, her lantern casting long shadows across the moss.

Something was watching. She could feel it in the way the branches stopped moving, even as the wind still blew.

The trees stood silent as Iza crept between them, her lantern casting long shadows across the cold moss.

Something was watching. She could feel it in the way the branches stopped moving.

FINISVERSO IS BORN
The idea

What if we
built this for her?

What if there was something that could help her write — without writing it for her? Help her brainstorm, research, discover — without taking over. Without spying. With our guardrails already in place, and her voice completely, permanently protected.

That question became Verso.

✦ VERSO ✦
HOW VERSO WAS BORNIZA'S STORY
The beginning

8 months.
One story.

Iza spent eight months writing a book. Not a page, not a chapter — a real, finished book. Written sentence by sentence, scene by scene, in the quiet before school and the long hours after. A whole world, pulled entirely from her imagination.

HER BOOKA full-length story, written with the kind of sustained focus most adults struggle to find.
HER WORDSEvery sentence hers — not a template, not a prompt. A world she invented from scratch.
HER TIMEEight months of mornings and evenings poured into a single, stubborn dream.

CHAPTER IFRAN & TALY
Two very tech-savvy parents

ChatGPT.
Gemini.

We are Iza's parents — Fran and Taly. Proud of her in every way, and completely lost in what came next. Fortunately, we're both very tech-savvy. So we turned to the tools we knew best and spent countless hours trying to edit her book without losing what made it hers.

CHATGPTHelpful — but it wanted to rewrite everything its own way. Iza's voice kept disappearing.
GEMINISame problem. Great at language. Not great at protecting a child's particular, irreplaceable voice.
THE STRUGGLEFighting to keep it hers, while every tool wanted to make it 'better' — and wrong.
CHAPTER IITHE FORMAT
Adobe Captivate. Months of it.

Margins.
Gutters. Bleed.

We formatted using Adobe Captivate. We learned typesetting, interior margins, exterior margins, bleed, gutter, chapter headers, font pairing, page layout — a mountain of decisions that had nothing to do with Iza's actual story.

Months of research into editing
Every expert had a different answer. Best practices shifted with every article we read.
Months of learning formatting
A whole profession's worth of knowledge — needed just to hold the book together on a page.
The deeper question
Why was all of this standing between a child's story and the rest of the world?
CHAPTER IIIPUBLISHING
ISBN? Publisher? Amazon?

The questions
never ended.

Then came publishing. We spent months unraveling it. With every answer came three more questions.

Do we need a publisher?
Or could we self-publish? What does that even mean for a first book by a young author?
What is an ISBN?
How do you get one? Does a child author need one? Do we register it in her name?
How does Amazon work?
KDP, print-on-demand, royalties, categories — an entire industry hidden behind a single button.
And how do you actually sell it?
To strangers, not just family. That turned out to be a completely different rabbit hole.
CHAPTER IVTHE GLITCH
The unexpected

All of it.
Gone.

Then the unexpected happened. A computer glitch. The formatting, the edits, the weeks of careful patient work — erased. We had to start from scratch.

The glitch
A single moment wiped everything we had built around Iza's story.
The grief
Iza cried. We sat in front of a blank screen and felt the full weight of it.
The reset
We started over. And this time, we started asking a very different kind of question.
